Stephen M. Coleman Jr.

Stephen M. Coleman Jr. currently serves as the Chief of the Auburn (MA) Fire Rescue Department. He has instituted significant change within the department in the past eleven years he has served as Chief. Steve created the Bureau of Community Risk Reduction and modernized the fire prevention division by bringing new technology to the office and making the inspection process essentially paperless. He also expanded the division by bringing in the department's first Fire Protection Engineer on staff. Over the past decade he has increased staffing, modernized the department's equipment, and fleet and has added innovative specialty programs and positions to the department. Steve created and implemented three innovative public safety programs that are unique to Auburn and are the only ones of their kind in the Commonwealth. Auburn operates the only EMS Motorcycle Unit licensed as a Class V Ambulance that supports the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Counsels (CEMLEC) Police Motor Unit. The only fire-based Human Remains Detection K9 and the only Paramedic with full Police powers that operates in the hot zone with the CEMLEC SWAT Team. He also created the department's first full-time EMS Coordinator position who also serves as the town's “Community Paramedic” working on public health issues with the Board of Health and Mobile Integrated Health Care. He also created the department's first dedicated Emergency Vehicle Technician mechanics position within the town.

Mr. Coleman is a past adjunct faculty member at Quinsigamond Community College and Anna Maria College in the fire science programs. He is a past Instructor for the Massachusetts Fire Fighting Academy in the Fire Officer programs. Mr. Coleman holds a bachelor's degree in Fire Science from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA, and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Clark University in Worcester, MA. He is also a graduate of the Chief Fire Officer Management Training Program run jointly with the Massachusetts Fire Fighting Academy and the UMass Donahue Institute. Mr. Coleman is designated as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).

Mr. Coleman led Massachusetts Fire District 7 as Chairman from 2013-2017 and now serves as the District 7 Regional Director for the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts since 2017. He currently serves as the fire district's Public Information Officer. Mr. Coleman has authored several articles for national fire service publications and has been a speaker at Fire Rescue International, CPSE, and SAFE-D as well as several local conferences on the topics of leadership, customer service, and public relations.
