The City of Rochester (Population 30,955), incorporated in 1722 is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Fire Chief. Located in Southeastern New Hampshire, the department covers a response area of 46 square miles and operates from two stations. The Department is an ISO Class 3 organization that employs 44 career firefighters and 5 on call personnel which includes an Assistant Chief, 3 Deputy Chiefs, 4 Captains, 4 Lieutenants and 31 firefighters. The department responded to 2,462 emergency calls in 2020. The annual operating budget is 5.04 million dollars.
The Chief is appointed by and reports to the City Manager and is a member of the City’s Leadership team. Candidates must have strong, innovative leadership, planning and managerial skills combined with excellent interpersonal and communications skills and a sense of social responsibility. A proven, successful record of experience in progressively responsible supervisory, administrative and command assignments is required.
Minimum qualifications include: Bachelors’ Degree in Fire Science or Fire Administration; Master’s preferred; 15 years of fire suppression experience as a career member in an organized fire department and at least 6 years of experience as a command officer in a comparable or larger organization. A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
