The Town of Effingham, NH (Pop 1,537), is seeking an experienced fire officer for the position of part-time fire chief. Effingham is a rural community adjacent to Green Mountain on the eastern boarder of Carroll County and is located within the New Hampshire Lake’s Region. Effingham is centrally located in proximity to North Conway and is 45 miles from Portland Maine.

The Chief is expected to work approximately 24 hours per week to maintain regular office hours, respond to emergencies when on-duty, attend training sessions and to be available for emergency call-backs. This includes covering two ten-hour scheduled day shifts and providing an average of 4 hours of training and call back emergency response. The chief is required to reside (or establish residency within a year) in the Town of Effingham or within 15 miles.

The chief is appointed by and reports to by a three-member Select Board. The ideal candidate will have experience building positive relationships and recruiting fire service personnel. Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the fire service, with at least 5 years of supervisory experience; or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The chief is required to be an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) with the ability to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) from the National Registry of EMTs and an EMS Provider License from the State of NH within a year of appointment. Advanced education, fire officer training and certification including an Associate’s or degree with a concentration in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field is preferred. The chief is required to be Firefighter I certified.

The Effingham Fire Department is comprised of on-call and per-diem staff of approximately 18 personnel (12 on-call and 6 per diem - 7 on-call members are certified at the FFI level) and is responsible for providing fire, rescue and EMS first response. The Department has an ISO rating of 8B/10 and responds from two stations to approximately 196 emergency incidents per year.

Compensation range: $20,000 - $25,000 commensurate with training and experience.
